Overview
Koelker Excavating is hiring a proven Commercial Foreman to lead crews on large-scale sitework and underground utility projects throughout Iowa. This role is ideal for a hands-on leader who can manage people, schedules, safety, and production — all while maintaining a strong presence in the field.
The ideal candidate has experience coordinating excavation, grading, storm/sewer, and water main crews, and can effectively communicate with project managers, subcontractors, and inspectors.
QUALIFICATIONS
- 3+ years of experience as a foreman or lead operator in civil construction
- Strong understanding of commercial sitework and underground utilities
- Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications
- Experience managing crews, equipment, materials, and subcontractors
- Familiar with GPS layout systems, grade checking, and staking
- Able to lead pre-task safety meetings and enforce site safety protocols
- Excellent communication and time management skills
- Valid driver’s license required; CDL preferred
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Supervise day-to-day site operations on commercial jobs
- Manage and motivate operators and laborers to maintain production goals
- Interpret plans and direct layout, trenching, grading, and backfilling
- Coordinate deliveries, equipment moves, and subcontractor activity
- Track materials used and work completed for daily reporting
- Communicate with project managers on progress and site needs
- Ensure all work is performed safely and according to project specs
- Solve problems on site and adapt to changes in schedule or conditions
